Virgil Harold Schieck, 94

Virgil Harold Schieck, 94, of Austin, Minnesota, died peacefully on Friday, Dec. 9, 2016, at Saint Marys Hospital, Rochester, Minnesota.

Virgil was born on Feb. 10, 1922, in Brownsdale, Minnesota, Mower County. He was the son of George and Emilie (Hussong) Schieck. Virgil was baptized on March 26, 1922, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Waltham, Minnesota, and confirmed there, as well, on May 17, 1936. On June 21, 1946, Virgil married Verna B. Juelson of Hayfield, Minnesota. The wedding took place at Evanger Lutheran Church in Sargeant, Minnesota. This past June, Virgil and Verna celebrated 70 years of marriage.

As a boy, Virgil attended Trinity Lutheran School in Waltham. He was later employed by Geo. A. Hormel and was a loyal employee for 42 years. Virgil and Verna have been faithful members of Holy Cross Lutheran Church for 69 years. They loved to travel, taking them across the United States and to Norway and Germany.

Virgil was a loving and devoted husband to Verna as well as a special uncle to 14 nieces and nephews, Marcia Christensen, Michael (Lorinda) Schieck, Rita (George) Heydt, Sally (Randy) Pettitt, Dwight Schieck, Dennis (Barb) Schieck, Thomas (deceased), Kristine (Dennis) Hanson, Jane Mosman, Joel (Pearl) Schieck, Richard (Mary) Schieck, Ronald (Gloria) Schieck, Jeanine (Russ) Kvittem and Roberta (Greg) Lein. He was also a great-uncle to 22 nieces and nephews and a great-great uncle to 31 nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, five siblings, Lorenz, Alvin, Esther Johnson, Erwin and Donald, and his nephew Thomas.

Virgil is survived by his wife, Verna; brother and sister-in-law, Norman and Donna Schieck, Austin.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 13, at Holy Cross Lutheran Church with the Rev. Larry LaDassor officiating. Interment will be at Grandview Cemetery. A visitation for family and friends will take place at the church one hour before the service.

The family would like to suggest memorials be given to Holy Cross Lutheran Church.
