Austin VFW cited during DPS compliance check

An illegal football betting pool at the Austin VFW Post 1216 was one of several violations discovered during the three months of compliance checks by the Department of Public Safety Alcohol and Gambling Enforcement Division and the Gambling Control Board.

According to a news release issued by the department, an employee at the VFW was conducting a football pool, taking bets on individual NFL games and keeping a percentage of the total bets placed.

Two establishments in Marshall were also cited.

The annual joint effort was a way to educate establishments on liquor laws and illegal gambling. The random checks included 110 establishments in 12 cities around the state between September and November.

Officials said the majority of violations were minor with the establishments receiving onsite education or a warning.
