The No. 9 seeded Austin girls soccer team kept its season alive when it pulled off a 1-0 win at No. 8 Fairmont (7-8-1 overall) in a Section 2A Tournament game Monday.
The Packers (5-10-1 overall) got the game-winner when Sydney Marsh sunk a 30-yard direct kick with 32:29 left in the second half.
“It was a beautiful shot,” Austin head coach Jake Levisen said. “After that we continued to play smart soccer.”
The Packers played against a 20 mile per hour wind in the first half and they made sure that Fairmont wasn’t able to get an early score.
“The girls played very smart possessions to account for the wind,” Levisen said. “We kept our space and our position.”
Cassity Nangle had 10 saves to get the shutout for Austin.
Austin will now play top-seeded Mankato West at 5 p.m. Thursday in Mankato. The Packers gave the Scarlets a competitive game in the regular season as West won 1-0 in Austin Sept. 8.
