ROCHESTER —The Austin football team beat Rochester John Marshall for the first time since 2009 and claimed its first playoff game since 2013 as it blasted the Rockets 28-12 in a Section 1AAAAA quarterfinal game in Rochester Tuesday night.

JM had ended Austin’s season last year and it beat the Packers in the season opener before Austin was able to turn the tables this time around.

“This game meant more than both of those games combined,” Austin senior lineman Kyle Oberbroeckling said. “It meant so much to me as a senior and we’re moving on. I’m so happy.”

The Packers have now won four straight games as they prepare for a Section 1AAAAA semifinal game at top-seeded Owatonna at 7 p.m. on Saturday. The Huskies were the last team to beat Austin when they topped the Packers 49-18 Sept. 30.

“These guys have responded the last four weeks,” Austin head coach Brett Vesel said of his team. “People can easily just fold up the tent and cash it in when you get to 0-5, but our guys have had a great attitude. They always come to practice to work and they never complain.”
