Bernard ‘Barney’ Rohde Sr., 87

Bernard “Barney” Rohde Sr., 87, died Oct. 19, 2016, in Clay Center, Kansas.

Bernard was born on Nov. 27, 1928, to George and Millie Barnett in Austin, Minnesota. He was raised in Minnesota and Iowa.

Barney enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1945 and served in World War II. In 1949, Barney enlisted in the US Army and served in Korea and Vietnam. During his service time, he earned the Purple Heart, Bronze Star and Silver Star. He retired from the Army in 1969.

Barney married Patsy Hunsinger in 1954. After leaving the Army, Barney worked in the maintenance department at Kansas State University, retiring in 1978. Patsy preceded him in death in 1985. In 1989, Barney married Billie Griffiths and they made their home in Clay Center. Billie preceded him in death in 2014.

Barney was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars club where he was past Commander, American Legion, Lions Club, O.E.S. Isis Shrine and served as a volunteer for Meadowlark Hospice.

He is survived by his children: Jeff and wife Donna Rohde of La Junta, Colorado; Tina and husband Larry Samuelson of Morganville, Kansas; Bernard, Jr. and wife Phyllis Rohde of Riley, Kansas; Steven and wife, Diana, Rohde of Reading, Kansas; a stepdaughter: Kellie Thomas of Nebraska; siblings: Geraldine and her husband, Richard, of Wodke, Iowa; Reta Rohde of Iowa; Olven Rohde of Iowa; Clifford Rohde of Iowa; Duane Rohde, Iowa; Geraldine and husband Richard Wodke, Iowa; nine grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, four step-grandchildren and six step-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Julie; his parents, a sister and five brothers.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. at the Rose Hill Cemetery in Randolph, Kansas. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 25 at Neill-Schwensen-Rook Funeral Home.
