A new salon opened up in Downtown Austin Tuesday aiming to provide the community with family friendly, affordable haircare.

JM Salon opened its third location Tuesday at 120 Third Ave. NW in downtown Austin.

Owner Martina Narvaez completed cosmetology school at Riverland Community College, so she’s excited to return to Austin.

“I’m excited to be back in Austin as a lot of my friends live here,” Narvaez said

JM Salon will host its grand opening the week of Sep. 5-11 by offering a $7.99 haircut special. Regular price for haircut will be $15.

In addition to haircuts, the salon is also offering coloring, highlights, lowlights, extensions, weaves, curling, updos, roller sets and perms. Makeup application is also available for special events such as prom and weddings.

Narvaez’s idea to start her own salon stems to her time at Riverland as she has always wanted to help people to afford quality hair care for their families.

“I knew what it was like trying to afford a haircut for my three children and I wanted to be able to make that affordable for people.” Narvaez said.

She made that happen when she opened her first JM Salon in Owatonna about four years and then her second shop in Faribault about two years ago.

Although one of the main points for JM Salon is affordability, quality is also important.

“We really want to take our time with what we are doing,” Narvaez said. “We want to make personal connections with our customers and make sure they don’t feel like they are just a number.”

Prior to starting her first salon in Owatonna, Narvaez worked in the Twin Cities and in Faribault as a stylist.

Looking to the future, Narvaez wants to open several more salons and to inspire others.

“I think the sky is the limit, having seven salons is the current goal, but we will have to see where we are when the time comes,” Narvaez. “I want to be able to have children and adults alike look at what I am doing and know that anyone can start a business as long as they believe in themselves and work hard.”

JM Salon will have four employees — owner Nanaez, manager Miriam Mendoza, and stylists Cindy Maldonado and Estrella Gutierrez — and she said she is still hiring.

JM Salon will be open 9 a.m to 8 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m on Sunday. It will be closed on Mondays.
