MINNEAPOLIS — Minneapolis police have started tracking the race, gender and other demographics of people pulled over for traffic offenses.

Police Chief Janee Harteau says the new requirement is aimed at increasing transparency and public trust in her department.

Minnesota Public Radio News says officers will also log demographic information during calls on curfew, truancy and suspicious behavior. Officers will enter the data on their squads’ computers. It will be analyzed and released to the public on a quarterly basis.

St. Paul police have been gathering demographic information on some calls for more than a decade.
