MANKATO — Family members say the Mankato woman attacked by her husband who then committed suicide is in a medically-induced coma.

Police say Nyawill Nyuon Dup suffered head injuries when her estranged husband, David Khat Kong, struck her with a hammer Monday. The 46-year-old Dup was taken to Mayo Clinic Health System in Mankato after her daughter called 911. Kong was found outside the home with a self-inflicted injury. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Dup’s aunt, Mary Kok, tells The Free Press that her niece is expected to recover. Kok says the couple immigrated to the U.S. from Sudan in 1994 and came to Mankato about 15 years ago.
