Jump into fall with Harvest Fest

Mark your calendar to check out Harvest Fest on Saturday, Sept. 17, in the Austin Municipal Pool parking lot.

There will be a Harvest 5K run/walk starting at 9 a.m. with proceeds benefiting the Mower County food shelves — to register go to mowerrefreshed.org/harvest-5k. There will be many other activities from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Check out what is coming up for activities this fall and winter. Don’t forget to get your harvest passport stamped at the booth so you can enter to win a prize.

 Riverside Arena

Three-on-three hockey at Riverside Arena will begin the week of Sept. 12.

Register in our office by Sept. 7. The cost is $45 per participant. All age groups will begin at 6 p.m.

•Mites will play on Sept. 12, 19, 26, Oct. 3, 10, 17 and 24.

•Squirts/U12/U14 will play on Sept. 13, 20, 27, Oct. 4, 11, 18 and 25.

•Peewee/Bantam will play on Sept. 15, 22, 29, Oct. 6, 13, 29 and 27.

Learn to Play Hockey at Riverside Arena starts again on Sept. 14 will go for seven weeks. Cost is $35 per participant. This is geared for those three years old and up. Austin Youth Hockey will allow those that participate the opportunity to rent equipment for a fee of $25. Skates are available for $1.

Please register in our office, open from 8 to 5 p.m. Monday-Friday. The registration deadline is Friday, Sept. 9.

The Austin Riverside Figure Skating Club will offer three free lessons of learn to skate.

Their season will start at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 25. Feel free to stop in and check it out. You can bring your own skates or use a pair at the arena. Learn to skate is for new skaters only.

 Austin Municipal Pool

We are glad to see the public using the splash pad and will continue to keep it open as the weather permits.

Enter from the gate that faces the parking lot where the splash pad is located. This area will not be lifeguard supervised as it is not a body of water and can be treated like a playground. This area will not be supervised as it is not a body of water and can be treated like a playground.

The splash pad will be on a timer allowing the features to shut off at 8 p.m. each day. We hope that the splash pad is treated with respect so we can continue this service.

 Volleyball

Registration is open for the Parent and Child volleyball camp which starts on Saturday, Sept. 24, and meets the three Saturday mornings after.

Cost is $25 per child participant. This program will be held from 9 to 10 a.m. in Hastings Gym at Austin High School. This camp is geared for second through fourth grade both girls and boys. Participants are encouraged to bring someone 16 and older along with them.

This is a great opportunity for a parent to experience learning a sport with their child. No volleyball experience is necessary. This fundamentals camp will be using stations with instructors teaching movement, vocalization and the basic fundamentals of volleyball.

 Citizen Academy

The Austin Police Department will host the 2016 Citizen Academy 6 to 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday’s starting Sept. 13 and going for six weeks. Participants must be an Austin resident or business owner age 21 or older. Fill out your application early as the class size is limited. They are available at the LEC or online at www.ci.austin.mn.us.

 Izaak Walton Cabin

Are you looking for a location to host a family event?

The Izaak Walton Cabin is open year-round. We have updated the serving and clean up area this year as well. The cabin is also available Monday to Thursday for meetings at $20 per hour and a $150 deposit. The week-end rate is $170 from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. with a $300 deposit. This is a great venue for family gatherings.

Are you looking for a Are you looking for a place to rent this fall for a special occasion?

Check availability of the Ruby Rupner Auditorium by calling the nature center at 507-437-7519. The rental fee is $41 per hour between 7 a.m. and 10 p.m. with a $100 deposit. There is a sound system available for a $25 additional fee.

There is no smoking or alcohol permitted in the Nature Center. The log cabin is also available for your use with the auditorium rental.
