Florence M. Glover, 100

Florence M. Glover, 100, of Austin, Minnesota, died Sunday, Sept. 25, 2016, at St. Mark’s Lutheran Home, with her granddaughter Sandy by her side.

Florence Marie Mortensen was born April 13, 1916, in rural Warren, Minnesota, the daughter of Carl O. and Maren C. (Ditlefsen) Mortensen. She was the fifth of 10 children. Florence was raised on the family farm, and upon the death of her parents when Florence was a child, she and her 4 younger sisters went to live at the Wild Rice Children’s Home in Twin Valley, Minnesota. Florence moved in with relatives in St. Paul when the Children’s Home burned down. Following her graduation from St. Paul Central High School, where she excelled in track and field, Florence moved to the Austin area. She went to work for Hormel Foods Corp. until she met the love of her life, Russell L. Glover. On July 15, 1936, Florence and Russell were married in Owatonna, Minnesota. Their union was blessed with three children. The couple moved to Corning, Minnesota, where they managed the Corning Grocery Store until 1938, upon which time they moved to Austin where Russell was offered a job with the City of Austin. Here Florence worked at Piggly Wiggly and for the high school lunch program.

A longtime member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Austin, Florence enjoyed playing tennis and volunteering her time to the Mower County Senior Center for over 25 years. She enjoyed sewing and loved to crochet. She made 25 afghans and gave them to family members. Florence was the longest living member of the Danish Sisterhood. She and Russell loved to travel together, especially to their home in Arizona and their place on Kenny Lake in Garrison, Minnesota. Florence made four trips to Australia and one to Denmark to visit her Danish relatives. She was dearly loved, and will be missed by all who knew her.
