Best Bets: Walking, pedaling into a big weekend

After a restful Labor Day weekend, Austin and Mower County are set for a jam-packed weekend of events as a bike race, an annual barrow show, a bit of music, and community walks return to the area.

1. Out of the Darkness Community Walk,

8 a.m. to noon Saturday at LaFayette Park.

Austin is jointing the push to raise awareness and funds for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) to invest in new research, create educational programs, advocate for public policy, and support survivors of suicide loss. Online registration closes at noon on Friday. However, anyone who would like to participate can register in person at the walk from the time check-in begins until the walk starts. 2. Hairball concert

7 p.m. Saturday at the Mower County Fairgrounds Grandstand

All ages are welcome as Hairball hits the grandstand with its “bombastic celebration of arena rock” with special guest Severe Logic. Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 day of show and available at http://www.hairballonline.com. For more information, call 507-433-1868.

3. National Barrow Show Windsor Pork Chop Dinner

11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Sunday in the Plager Building on the Mower County Fairgrounds

The annual National Barrow Show in Austin returns with an annual meal. Dine on Hormel Windsor pork chop, coleslaw, baked beans, dinner roll and beverage for $10. All proceeds help offset expenses associated with hosting the National Barrow Show. The 70th annual show will be conducted Sept. 10-14 at the Mower County Fairgrounds. The show will be Saturday through Wednesday at the fairgrounds.

4. Minnesota High School Cycling League race

8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Austin trail west of Todd Park

Austin will welcome more than 650 bicyclists and about 55 teams as it hosts its second mountain biking race to kick off the Minnesota High School Cycling League’s season. 5. 20th Annual Mower County Walk for the Animals

1 p.m. Sunday at Mill Pond Registration begins at 1 pm, walk at 2 pm.

The annual walk for Mower County’s four-legged friends returns. Prizes will be awarded to top pledge raisers. All participants will enjoy free hot dogs and refreshments. Pledge forms available at the Humane Society, Austin Vet Clinic, Double K Specialty, and the Austin Public Library. For more information, call 507-437-9262.
