Best Bets: Fall kicking off with a busy weekend

Austin isn’t slowing down for the first weekend of autumn, as several events are planned to give people a chance to get out and about and enjoy the changing season.

1. Austin ArtWorks Open Jam Session

7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Austin ArtWorks Center. 

Austin is ready to jam out again. House band Ventura Highway will host the return of Art Works Open Jam Sessions, where all are welcome and people can come have fun and play music. The event is free, but a donation at the door would be appreciated. Cash bar will be available. For more information, call 507-434-0934.

2. Fourth annual Austin High School Clay Target team benefit shoot

8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Cedar Valley Conservation Club

The Austin High School trap team is hosting a benefit shoot which will include breakfast and lunch with a breakfast will be served from 8-10 a.m and lunch will be served from noon to 2 p.m. There will be two shooting events which will begin at 9 a.m. There will be four divisions for shooting:  Adult, Ladies, Junior(ages 15-17) and Sub Junior(ages 12-14). Breakfast will be $5, Lunch will be $8, shooting for adults will be $25 and shooting for youth will be $15.

3. Hormel Nature Center 8 K Trail Run, 1 Mile Kiddie Run,

9 a.m. Saturday at the Jay C. Hormel Nature Center

This chip-timed run will feature a beautiful course through the Nature Trail. Refreshments will be served and racers will get T-shirts for racers. For more information, go to www.hormelnaturecenter.org, call 507-437-7519or email info@hormelnaturecenter.org.

4. Fall Harvest Celebration

11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Mower County Historical Society

The annual celebration returns to the Mower County Historical Society featuring arts and crafts, wagon rides, demonstrations, pioneer activities for the whole family, Thresher’s dinner, bake sale, live music, gunny sack races and candy blast, and much more. Outdoor exhibits will be open, including railroad car, log cabin, blacksmith’s shop. The event is free and open to all ages. Call 507-437-6082 for more information.

5. The Cedars 30th Anniversary

11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at The Cedars Millpond Parking Lot

The Cedars of Austin will celebrate its 30th anniversary with a River Rate’s Car Club Show, live entertainment, free food and beverages, and a Jaycee’s Beer Garden.
