Best Bets: A weekend of fun at the county fair

From filming workshops, skating contests, driving classes and more, this weekend offers a variety of new things to try. With the Mower County Fair in full swing, everyone should get out and enjoy the peak of summer with family and friends.

1. Mower County Fair

7:30 a.m. until 10 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday and 7:30 a.m. until 2 p.m. Sunday

The Mower County Fair is fun for all ages and is a great place to be with friends and family. Enjoy fair food, rides, shows, exhibits, animals, grandstand events and more.

2. NTPA Tractor Pull

7 p.m. on Thursday at the grandstand

The annual tractor pull thunders back to the fair. Tickets are $12 and children under age 5 are free.

3. How to become a film friendly community

7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday at Discover Austin

Free workshop by Troy Parkinson, Directory of Production, Minnesota Film and TV. This workshop will present how to create effective filming guidelines, what to expect, production insurance, location agreements and more. To RSVP, call 507-437-4563.

4. The Gear Daddies and Sx Mile Grove

7:30 p.m. on Friday at the fair grandstand

The Mower County Homegrown concert will feature the Gear Daddies and opening act Six Mile Grove at the grandstands. The Gear Daddies hit it big in 1990 with their hockey arena staple “Zamboni,” and Six Mile Grove hails from Lyle. Tickets are $25 for regular tickets and $35 for VIP tickets.

5. Defensive driving class

9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday at the Mower County Senior Center

Cost for members is $16, non-members is $19. This class is a refresher course needed for the 10 percent discount off your insurance premium. For more information or to register, call 507-433-2370.

6. Berenstain Bears collection official opening

11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at Sweet Reads

Meet the collector and hear the background story about the collection. This event is for all ages. For more information, call 507-440-7046.

7. Great Frontier Bull Riding

7 p.m. Saturday night at the grandstands

It’s no bull — this popular fair event is sure to draw a crowd when it returns Saturday to the grandstand with bull riding and mutton busting. Tickets are $15 and children age 5 and under are free.

8. Masters of Disaster Demo Derby

2 p.m. Sunday afternoon at the grandstands

Get ready for a smashing good time when Masters of Disaster return for the closing grandstand event of the 2016 fair. Tickets are $15 and children age 5 and under are free.

9. Enkl’s early grab round-up

11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday at the Austin Skate Park

This fundraiser is promoting a sober and safe environment for youth. Skating contests will be held, along with prizes. A helmet is required. All proceeds go towards restoration for the skate park and addiction recovery resources. For more information, call 507-433-1881.
