Best Bets: Time to hit the trails, talk clean water

With a trail crew coming to the Jay C. Hormel Nature Center this weekend and the third annual Water Festival starting Monday, July is the time to get outside and enjoy the summer weather while maybe mixing in a bit of service. This weekend will also feature fun in Rose Creek and roller derby mixer.

1. A weekend on the trails

3 to 5 p.m. Friday for “Better Living Through Trails” at Ruby Rupner Auditorium at the nature center; 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday for “Trail Building Class” at Ruby Rupner Auditorium; 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday Austin Mountain Bike Trail hands on discussion.

The International Mountain Bicycling Association’s (IMBA) Subaru/IMBA Trail Care Crew will be in Austin, Minnesota on Friday and Saturday to talk trails, teach people proper trail building technique and spend quality time digging in the dirt. The visit is one of about 40 stops on the 2016 schedule. Everyone is invited to attend the weekend’s events. 2. Rose Creek Fun Days

Friday through Sunday in Rose Creek

The three-day Rose Creek Fun Days returns for the 149th year. Residents and visitors to the city have a lot of chances to interact with one another during a weekend long softball tournament, volleyball tournament, medallion hunt and more. The firemen’s pork chop dinner is always a big draw for the community.

Friday, July 8:

• Youth and adult kickball, late afternoon to evening

Saturday, July 9:

• Softball tournament starts

• Volleyball at The Creek

•Live Music: Dance Saturday night in the park

Sunday, July 10:

• Firemens’ water fight and pork chop supper

• Softball tournament continues

• Bean bag tournament

All weekend:

•Concessions in the park

•Medallion hunt in the park, clues will be randomly posted at the concession stand throughout the weekend, winner will take home the medallion and cash prize

3. Minnesota Southbound Rollers Derby Area Mixer

7 p.m. Saturday at Packer Arena 

Skaters from all over will participate in the event, with proceeds from this event going to benefit the Austin Fire Department muscular dystrophy fundraising effort. For more information, go to www.minnesotasouthboundrollers.com. Tickets are $10 advance $12 at the door kids 12 under free with adult.

4. Third Annual Austin Clean Water Festival

7 p.m. Monday at Ruby Rupner Auditorium at the Jay C. Hormel Nature Center

Cedar River Watershed District Project Manager Cody Fox kicks off the third annual celebration of the importance of clean water with a project update on the CRWD’s nearly $8 million, five-year Capital Improvement Project (CIP) focused on improving water quality and reducing flooding. Those attending must RSVP by Friday. Water Festival events continue throughout next week.
