The new Mexican consul visited Austin Wednesday and was impressed by what he saw.

Gerardo Guerrero was recently named the new Mexican consul and is stationed in St. Paul.

Mayor Tom Stiehm said consuls usually go around to different cities in Minnesota. He met Guerrero at the Law Enforcement Center.

“He was impressed by Austin and how we’re working hard to make Austin a decent place for people, for everybody,” Stiehm said. “We’re trying to make Austin a livable city, where everyone can live.”

Guerrero visited Riverland Community College, the LEC and other popular spots in Austin.

The consul also took fingerprints, a retinal scan and issued ID cards, which Police Capt. David McKichan said they accept as proper forms of identification.
