“I think we improved as a team,” Wuertz said of the team’s summer effort. “We grew together and we picked up on certain skills. Tonight we had a lot of shots and we had fun.”

Austin almost came up with a big time goal when Erin Bickler’s shot from 50 yards out was deflected away from the net by New Ulm’s keeper at the last possible second.

Maya Hoium picked up the shutout in net for Austin with eight saves.

Paige Raymond said that Austin (4-3-3 overall) wanted to go out on a high note and Thursday’s win put them over the .500 mark for the year.

“We wanted to finish the season strong,” Raymond said. “The summer was really important so we could get used to playing with each other before the fall.”
