The No. 4 seeded Hayfield baseball team nearly knocked off the top-seed in Section 1A West, but after falling short the Vikings were able to keep their season alive in Seltz Field Monday.

Hayfield lost its first game 2-1 to United South Central (14-5 overall) when it allowed a run off an error in the bottom of the seventh to end the game. Then the Vikings bounced back to knock off No. 3 Faribault Bethlehem Academy 14-3 in six innings in an elimination game.

Both of USC’s runs were unearned, but Hayfield head coach Kasey Krekling was more worried about his team coming up with just five hits in that loss.

“I thought we played pretty well. The defensive issues cost us, but we had chances to score runs and we didn’t,” Krekling said. “We had bad at bats and we didn’t put the ball in play.”

The Vikings (13-10 overall) found their offensive groove immediately against FBA as they scored five runs in the top of the first. Dominic Dublin had four RBIs in that win and he had Hayfield’s lone RBI against USC.

“We all got back into it mentally,” Dublin said about the FBA game. “We’re pretty mentally strong and we’ve done this before where we’ve lost the first one and won the second one in doubleheaders.”

Hayfield junior Brady Dahl picked up the win against the Cardinals as he allowed two earned runs in six innings.

“We just knew if we lost, we were done,” Dahl said. “We built up a lead and I trust my defense when I pitch, so I threw strikes. I was pretty nervous, but I have all the faith in the world in my defense.”

Hayfield will play another Section 1A West elimination game in Riverland 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.
