Some downtown offices are making way for a summer Spam-vasion.

The Mower County board voted to close the Mower County Jail and Justice Center and Government Center at noon on July 29.

County staff will work regular hours, but department heads will have the option to work with staff and use vacation time or paid time off that day.

On July 29, Hormel Foods Corp. will hold a community celebration for its 125th anniversary and for the grand opening of the new Spam Museum at 101 Third Ave. NE.

That day’s celebration will be downtown on the grassy spot between the Jail and Justice Center and the Historic Paramount Theatre just east of the new museum starting at 3 p.m. and ending with fireworks around 10 p.m.

The festivities are expected to bring numerous people to downtown Austin as the day will peak with a performance by award-winning country band The Band Perry.

The day will also feature Hormel’s Spamerican Tour truck, celebrity chef Sunny Anderson, an unnamed opening band, local talent and other festival activities.

Hormel has set up an anniversary page at www.hormelfoods125.com.
