The Lyle-Pacelli baseball team was in a good position to win the game in the fourth inning against the Wolverines and then their senior catcher put them in a great position to win the game with a big blast. LP’s Lee Bauer drilled a two-out, inside-the-park grand slam to give the Athletics an 8-0 lead and they went on to beat Glenville-Emmons (0-4 overall) 11-1 in five innings in Marcusen Park Friday.

Bauer had never hit a home run over the fence or in the park before with the Athletics, but he was able to finish Friday’s round-tripper with a jogging finish as his hit rolled all of the way to the center field wall.

“It felt good off the bat and I knew I had to run hard to get around,” Bauer said. “It felt really good [to hit a homer] and it was good to do it at home when everyone’s here.”

Sophomore Taylor Arett struck out six and he allowed just three hits to pick up the mound win for LP (3-0 overall).

“We’ve been preaching to get ahead of batters and throw strikes,” LP head coach Brock Meyer said. “That’s all we’ve got to do. When Taylor gets ahead of hitters, he’s fine.”

Daniel Bollingberg was two-for-two with a triple for LP, Braden Kocer was two-for-three with an RBI and seventh grader Jed Nelson was one-for-three with two RBIs.

The Athletics have outscored their first three opponents by a total score of 30-3, but Meyer is expecting wins to be tougher to come by as the schedule gets tougher.

“It’s good to be 3-0, but it really starts now with Mabel and Randolph next week. Those will be the big ones,” Meyer said. “Hopefully the hitting comes around. We need to start faster against better teams.”
