The Austin baseball team held a lead though five innings, but it couldn’t hold on as it dropped its season opener 4-3 at Red Wing Tuesday.

The Wingers (1-0 overall, 1-0 Big Nine) scored a pair of runs in the sixth to take the lead for good after Austin (0-1 overall, 0-1 Big Nine) had led 3-2.

Alex Ciola allowed just one run in three innings for the Packers and Phillip Zynda knocked in two runs.

“It was a good start from Alex and defensively we played really well,” Austin head coach Chris Gogolewski said. “Offensively we left guys on base and we were more or less looking for them to make errors instead of trying to drive in runs.”
