HAYFIELD — The Hayfield baseball team had a little trouble holding off Rochester Lourdes as it lost 16-5 in six innings to the Eagles in Hayfield Monday.

Lourdes did most of its damage in the second inning — where it hit two homers and scored five runs — and the sixth inning — where it had seven straight two hits and scored seven runs.

“We go as our starting pitchers go. When they have good outings, we seem to be up. But when they can’t throw strikes or they can’t get an out, it seems to be hard for our defenders to stay in the game,” Hayfield head coach Kasey Krekling said. “The wind blowing out doesn’t help our contact pitcher. We didn’t hit spots pitching and we didn’t make very many plays in the field.”

The Vikings had tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the first when Aaron Younge drove in two runs with a two-out double and Hayfield (5-5 overall, 3-5 HVL) had eight hits in the loss. But they just couldn’t hold off Lourdes (3-5 overall, 2-5 HVL).

Dominic Dublin was two-for-three with a double and an RBI for the Vikings.

“We hit pretty well,” Krekling said. “They threw a good pitcher and for the most part we made contact. I’m happy with most of the at bats today, but we’re not going to score 16 runs.”
