Austin grad Murphy named softball Player of the Week

Austin grad and University of Wisconsin-La Crosse third baseman Sydney Murphy has been named the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Softball Position Player of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday.
Murphy hit .722 (13-of-18) in six starts during the week. She finished with eight RBIs, two doubles, one run scored and one stolen base. Murphy had at least one hit in all six games, including four multiple-hit contests. She went 3-for-4 with four RBI versus Viterbo University (Wis.) March 29 and 3-for-6 at 20th-ranked Simpson College (Iowa) April 1.
She then went 4-for-4 with one run, two doubles and four RBI versus Buena Vista University (Iowa) April 2 and 3-for-4 against the University of Dubuque (Iowa). Murphy recorded a .700 on-base and .833 slugging percentage for the week.
Murphy has started all 21 games this season and leads UWL with a .483 (28-of-58) batting average. She is tied for the team lead in doubles (6) while ranking second in hits (28) and RBI (17).
UWL, 14-7 on the season, returns to action Wednesday, April 6 hosting UW-Eau Claire at 3 p.m. in a doubleheader at North Campus Field.
