Best Bets: A green weekend

Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day in a multitude of ways this weekend. With several parties to honor the Irish — and the day’s honorary Irish — along with the Home and Vacation Show, baseball in the dome and more, there are plenty of options for some fun in Austin.

1. St. Patty’s Day Parties

There’s tons of fun on St. Patty’s Day weekend throughout Austin. From 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday at the Austin VFW, get green beer and cheer, and corned beef and cabbage and road kill stew, followed by Larry’s Karaoke. For more information, call 507-433-6039. From 12 to 1 p.m. Friday at the Mower County Senior Center, a celebration will feature a corned beef meal for $9.50 or lemon butter baked cod for $8.50. Wear green so you don’t get pinched.

At the B&J Bar and Grill, the party goes all weekend from Thursday through Saturday. 2. Austin Home and Vacation Show

3-8 p.m. Friday, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Sunday Packer Arena

3. Brownsdale Fire Department Fish Fry

4-8 p.m. Friday, Brownsdale Fire Station

Come support the Brownsdale Fire Department at the fish fry. Tickets are $10 for adults, and children 12 and under are $7. Kids hotdog meals are available. The menu includes baked potato, cole slaw, beans, coffee, milk or lemonade.

4. Fourth annual Austin Area Free Baseball Clinic

9:30 a.m.-12 p.m. Saturday, 11:30 a.m.-2 p.m. Sunday, Austin Packer Dome

The clinic, which features the Austin High School baseball team, is open to all area boys and girls ages 8 through 12. There is registration at the start and participants will need to bring baseball gloves and tennis shoes. 5. Healthy Kids Day

9:30-11 a.m. Saturday, YMCA of Austin

Enjoy this local celebration of the YMCA’s national initiative to improve the health and well-being of kids. The event will feature an obstacle course, bounce house, gymnastics, and games in the pool, youth and tiny tykes sports, teen center, toddler gym, healthy snacks, and prizes. 6. Transit Authority

7:30-9 p.m. Saturday, Historic Paramount Theatre

Since performing their very first shows together in the early spring of 2003, Transit Authority has become known throughout the U.S. as a great tribute band to the iconic group Chicago. Based out of St. Paul, this eight-member ensemble creates an accurate musical salute to the greatest horn driven rock band to ever hit the stage. Tickets are $15 in advance or $20 at the door. 7. Rose Creek Fire Department Steak Fry

11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Rose Creek Fire Station, 105 Maple St. in Rose Creek

The Rose Creek Fire Department will host its annual Rose Creek Fire Department Steak Fry. There will be steak sandwiches and more, and there will be hot dogs for children. Proceeds will be used to purchase equipment for the fire department.
