For foodies in Austin, the time has come once again to experience some local talent.

The Fifth Annual Foodie Throwdown is 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the Hormel Historic Home. Local chefs will compete to create dishes while attendees will vote for their favorite main dish and dessert. Each chef will build their menu based on this year’s theme, Five Star, so guests should dress in Five Star cocktail attire.

“The theme for this year is Five Star Food, just because it’s the fifth [year],” Operations Manager and Wedding Coordinator Amanda Barber said. “And we’ve got five chefs competing.”

Social hour will begin at 6 p.m. and a cash bar will be available. Food sampling will start at 7 p.m. Entertainment will be by Reminisce, and a live auction will be open. All proceeds will benefit the Hormel Historic Home. Tickets are $30 and are limited.

For more information or to purchase tickets call 507-433-4243 or visit www.hormelhistorichome.org.

Each chef will make a different entree and dessert, which attendees will get a smaller portion of so they can try each dish.

“I personally think it’s my favorite event that the Hormel Historic Home puts on .. . just because you get to try different foods and it’s not all professional chefs necessarily,” Barber said. “Anyone that considers themselves a good chef or a good cook can compete.”

This year, the event will feature a live auction, which includes several baskets worth $400 to $500 each. A second new feature during the event will be a wine tasting by Three Oak Vineyards and Winery from Albert Lea.

“So there’s a couple new, exciting things going on this year with [those events],” Barber said.

Previous years, the event has sold out, and Barber said there weren’t many tickets left so people need to sign up fast.

“We usually sell out, so I’m anticipating we’ll sell out this year too,” she said. “Every year is a different theme, so that keeps it exciting also.”

“We have quite a few people that call and ask when the next one is going to be,” she added.
