The Hayfield boys basketball team stepped up its defense and its shooting as it knocked off Goodhue (13-6 overall, 7-5 HVL), which is ranked No. 7 in Class A, by a score of 53-40 on the road Thursday.
Hayfield trailed just once in the game as Goodhue took a 32-31 lead, but Trace Tebay hit a three-pointer to put the Vikings (11-8 overall, 5-6 HVL) up 34-32 with nine minutes left in the game.
Hayfield shot 8-for-12 on threes in the win and it jumped out to a 12-0 lead to start the game.
“To beat a team like that you have to shoot well because they play a zone and they’re so good defensively,” Hayfield head coach Chris Pack said. “We played really good defense and the fast start was big against a team that likes to slow it down.”
Goodhue 21 19 — 40
Hayfield 25 28 — 53
Hayfield scoring: Aaron Younge, 16; Drew Olive, 12; Aaron Anderson, 10; Trace Tebay, 7; Adam Younge, 4; Karl Stasko, 4; free throws: 79 percent (11-for-14)
