The Austin girls basketball team had a couple of late chances come up short as it lost 65-63 to Rochester Century in Ove Berven Gym Friday.

The Packers held a 63-61 lead late in the game, but its offense went scoreless in the last two minutes. Austin (3-3 overall, 3-3 Big Nine) had a chance to force overtime on its last possession of the night, but Rebecca Younis had a running jump shot come up short as time expired.

“I think it’s a frustrating game,” Austin head coach Todd Johnson said. “We knew Century was going to be a good basketball team and we knew it was going to be a battle. It seemed like we’d play well and then they’d get ahead. At the end they kind of got us a little frazzled and we couldn’t get a look.”

The Packers trailed for most of second half, but they were able to get an offensive boost from Shayley Vesel, who had 27 points and eight rebounds and Younis, who had six points, four rebounds, four assists and four steals. Vesel may have done more damage inside, but the Panthers made sure to key on her in the second half.

“Shayley is a big part of our game and they decided to play a box in one on her at times,” Johnson said. “Other kids stepped up, but a few other kids needed to step up. Tonight we didn’t seem to have our game and our personality and I’ll credit Century a little bit for that.”

Austin forced 20 turnovers in the loss, but it committed 24 turnovers.

“If we try to rush, we’re going to play into their hands, because they enjoy that,” Johnson said. “It felt like at times there were unnecessary passes that played into their game.”
