It was the same old story for the Hayfield volleyball team.

For the fourth straight year the Vikings had their season end to Faribault Bethlehem Academy when the No. 1 ranked Cardinals (22-7 overall) knocked off Hayfield 25-18, 25-19, 25-18 in the Section 1A West finals in Mayo Civic Center Thursday.

The Vikings (18-11 overall) trailed for the majority of the first and third sets, but they held a 11-6 lead in the second set.

Whenever the Vikings put together a rally, the Cardinals always had an answer.

“You can’t make a lot of mistakes against them. They’ll just place the ball everywhere you’re not. Sometimes we fell short, but we played our hardest,” said Hayfield sophomore Maggie Streightiff, who had nine kills and nine set assists. “We definitely can play with them and we know we can beat them. We’ve just got to finish.”

Hayfield was a little slow out of the gates as FBA jumped out to a 22-11 lead in the first set, but the Vikings fought back in that set to pull within 22-15 and Hayfield was competitive in the last two sets. In all, the Vikings just couldn’t keep pace with an FBA team that played mistake free volleyball for much of the night.

“You have to be mistake free on your side plus you have to be offensively minded. It’s tough every year against these guys,” Hayfield head coach Jeremy Struck said. “All I really wanted to do was to play our game on our side of the ball.”

Hayfield stats: Maggie Streightiff, 9 kills, 9 set assists, 2 ace serves, 1 block; Savanna Cordle, 4 kills, 6 blocks; Madison Booms, 4 kills; Alexis Dudycha, 10 set assists, 3 digs; Katelyn Bjornson, 1 kill, 3 blocks
