Austin took another step toward completing the Oak Park Mall deal.

The Austin City Council voted to accept a state grant for $375,000 Monday for the project for Hy-Vee to acquire the main portion of the Oak Park Mall property, demolish it and build a 60,000- to 90,000-square-foot grocery store between Younkers to the west and Shopko and Cinemagic 7 to the east.

“This is one of the final pieces for the Oak Park Mall project,” Director of Administrative Services Tom Dankert said.

Austin was one of only four communities that received one of the grants, since only a small pool of funding was available. The money will be granted to the city, which will then give it to Hy-Vee.

The Austin Port Authority unanimously approved the deal on Oct. 19, and the council approved additional funding and previsions relating to a tax increment finance district that same day.

The deal is expected to be finished sometime next week.
