NORTHFIELD — Austin senior Madison Overby finished her high school cross country career on a strong note and Austin freshman Abby Lewis put together another quality performance at the Class AA state meet in St. Olaf Saturday.

Overby finished in 52nd place with a time of 19:18.2 and Lewis took 71st with a time of 19:32.8. Overby was in 99th place after the first mile of the race and she worked her way back down the stretch.

“It’s a good career for Madison. Coming of the stress fracture that she had showed what kind of character she had,” Austin head coach Tony Einertson said. “It was a good race for both of them. Madison had her typical race. Abby’s been dealing with some stomach issues and she ran well.”

Overby has run in the Class AA state meet all six years of her high school and she has finished in the top 60 four times. Overby’s best finish at state was when she took 20th as an eighth grader.

“It was a great experience and I”m really glad to have made it state. It’s one of the best meets and it’s a great course,” Overby said of her six year run. “Making all state as an 8th grader was really exciting but i’m not less happy with my finish this year.”

Lewis took 68th at state last year as an eighth grader. She said just running at state is a prize in itself.

“I liked the course, but I would’ve liked to have finished better. But I’m happy just to be here,” Lewis said. “Basically I just have to work hard in every single workout which I’ve usually been doing.”
