FARIBAULT — The No. 3 seeded Awesome Blossoms tried to do everything they could to cover up for an injury to their starting quarterback, but they couldn’t fill the gaps in a 28-14 season ending loss at No. 2 Faribault Bethlehem Academy (9-1 overall) in the Section 2A semifinals Tuesday.

BP tried to run the wild-cat with senior wide receiver Anthony Nelson and used sophomore Lucas Noble, who as playing hurt, as much as possible but eventually it went to freshman quarterback Seth Peterson.

With BP trailing 21-14 in the fourth quarter, Peterson led the Awesome Blossoms (7-3 overall) to FBA’s 20-yard line with seven minutes left in the game when he was sacked on third down and threw an incomplete pass on fourth down.

FBA took the ball and went 71 yards on eight plays for a game-clinching score with 1:33 left in the game.

Nelson had a 74-yard TD run on his first play from scrimmage when he lined up behind the center for BP, but he wasn’t able to get a lot of running room after that burst.

“We were beat up. Give those guys a lot of credit,” BP head coach Chad Gimbel said. “Anthony learned on the fly, Lucas gave it his best shot and he played until he couldn’t go anymore and Seth was in a tough situation. It was baptism under fire. It’s a good group of kids.”

BP had seven drives end on FBA’s side of the field and two of them came on bad snaps on fourth down plays deep in FBA territory.

This will be the first year since 2006 that the Blossoms will not be playing in a section final.

“We played a good team tonight. We had opportunities and we missed out on opportunities. It doesn’t matter where you lose, you just hate to lose,” Gimbel said. “Compared to where we were at the beginning of the year to where we finished, the improvement that we saw from this group of kids, they have nothing to hang their heads about.”
