Children playing with matches and cardboard led to a small basement fire Saturday.

Austin firefighters responded to 207 First Ave. SW at around 4:50 p.m. where flames and smoke from a possible fire were reported, according to Police Chief Brian Krueger. Firefighters from the Austin Fire Department arrived to find individuals outside assuring them everybody was out of the building. There was no fire at the time.

Austin firefighters found cardboard in the basement, which was filled with smoke. Austin Fire Chief Jim McCoy spoke with children who were playing with matches and cardboard in the basement, according to the report.
