Thomas L. Handland, 91, of Austin, Minnesota, died Saturday, Aug. 15, 2015, at Our House Memory Care.

He was born June 29, 1924, in Rhinelander, Wisconsin, to Thomas and Mary (Lewis) Handland. Thomas attended school in Albert Lea, Minnesota, before serving in the U.S. Army at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, Headquarters Battery 18th Field Artillery Battalion. He served from May 1946 until his honorable discharge in June 1947, achieving the rank of Tech 4th Class. Thomas worked in auto body shops both in Albert Lea and Austin, and at a Ford Dealership in the Twin Cities for several years. His favorite pastimes were buying and restoring cars, and fishing.

Thomas is survived by his children: Thomas Handland of Mauston, Wisconsin, and Cynthia (Pete) Fitch of Elroy, Wisconsin; one grandchild Shawn Handland of Holmen, Wisconsin; two great-grandchildren: Isaac and Maron Handland.

He was preceded in death by his parents Thomas and Mary Handland; his wife Bonnie; his brother Robert Handland; his sister Donelle Hanson; and his daughter-in-law Bonnie Handland.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 20, 2015, at Graceland Cemetery in Albert Lea, Minnesota. Military honors by the Albert Lea Veteran’s Organization. Worlein Funeral Home of Austin is assisting the family with arrangements. Condolences may be expressed to the family online at www.worlein.com.
