HAYFIELD —The Hayfield volleyball team faced a little adversity in its home opener, but it had a response every single time as it swept Medford 25-20, 26-24, 25-21 in Hayfield Monday.

The Vikings took an early lead in the first two contests, but Medford wouldn’t go away in either of them. The Tigers (0-1 overall) pulled to within 20-18 late in the first game, they were tied at 24-24 in the second game and Medford led the third game 17-16.

“We were excited tonight [for the home opener],” said Hayfield sophomore Maggie Streightiff, who had 12 kills and 20 set assists. “I knew we’d have to play a good game to beat them. They’re a really scrappy team.”

The Vikings (1-1 overall) pulled away in the second game when Savanna Cordle came up with a tip kill to put Hayfield up 25-24. Hayfield pulled away in the first game when Katelyn Bjornson had a couple of late kills.

Hayfield has started its season off with two competitive matches as it lost to Fillmore Central in five games last week.

“We started off with Fillmore with an intense match and tonight was a battle. I’m excited for the rest of the season,” Cordle said.

Hayfield head coach Jeremy Struck is getting a lot of players on the floor early this season. He’s not sure that will last throughout the whole year, but it is effective at this point.

“We seem to have a deep bench and we seem to have people that can fill a role,” Struck said. “I don’t know how long we can go with a rotation of 11 players, but it’s working now.”

Hayfield stats: Maggie Streightiff, 12 kills, 20 set assists, 1 ace serve; Carrie Rutledge, 8 kills, 1 ace serve; Savanna Cordle, 7 kills; Dani Jax, 17 set assists; Anna Carney, 3 ace serves, 9 digs
