ROCHESTER — For the second straight District tournament game, the Austin Post 91 bats were on fire.

Top seeded Austin racked up 20 hits as it toppled the No. 4 seeded Rochester Century A’s 15-5 in eight innings in the First District Legion baseball quarterfinals in Massey Field in Mayo High School Thursday.

Austin (26-5 overall) hit up and down the batting order, but the top two hitters in the lineup led the charge. Leadoff hitter Daniel Bollingberg went 6-for-6 with four runs scored and an RBI and No. 2 hitter Nate Conner went 4-for-6 with three doubles and two RBIs.

“It’s really fun to go out there [and hit] and then have the guys behind you do the same thing basically and hit you in every time,” Bollingberg said. “We’re confident, but not overconfident. We know if we show up and play Post 91 baseball, we can beat anybody.”

Austin opened on the attack as Conner doubled in a run, Jordan Hart and Alex Ciola singled in runs and Ethan Horstmann knocked in two runs with a double. Austin co-head coach Andy Swank said that he couldn’t ask for more than what Post 91 gave him on Thursday.

“When the top two hitters are on base good things are going to happen no matter what,” Swank said. “They have speed and the ability to make things happen and up and down the lineup we had some big hits. The at-bat of the game may have been Ethan Horstmann’s two run hit in the first inning that kind of set the tone.”

In its last 15 innings of baseball, Post 91 has a total of 35 hits and 29 runs scored. Conner was able to find his swing early as he roped his first of three doubles into left field to put Austin on the board.

“It felt good things to get started and I felt pretty comfortable at the plate,” Conner said. “I wouldn’t have been mad if something bad happened, but it feels good to get things started.”

The A’s scored two runs in the top of the second, but Austin bounced back with another four runs in the bottom of the second as Jason Stoulil had a key two-out two-run single. Austin never had to sweat the rest of the way as pitchers Jake Reinartz and Isaac Schumacher held down the Rochester bats.

Reinartz struck out nine in just four innings of work.

“Getting the runs in the bottom of the first was big, but Jake getting the zero in the top of the first inning was just as big. For him to continue that was huge,” Bollingberg said.

Austin is now in the Final Four of the District and it is two wins away from its first state berth since 1991. Post 91 will play No. 3 seeded Rochester John Marshall 1 p.m. Saturday at Massey Field and the First District championship is set for 1 p.m. Sunday at Massey Field.

“It’s no time to cruise. We need to stay with what we’re doing,” Conner said.

Swank wants Post 91 to keep the momentum they have going as it heads into the weekend with plenty of fresh pitching.

“We keep telling them you’re never as good as you think you are, but if we keep playing this kind of baseball, it’s going to be tough for someone to beat us,” Swank said. “It’s exciting and we’re ready to make a run I think.”
