Best Bets: Get out and run

The fun goes countywide this weekend with events all over Mower. With visits from furry friends, a celebration in LeRoy, a garden tour and more, this weekend is sure to be inspiring, fun and memorable.

1. Gene Roden Memorial Track Meet

6:15-9:45 p.m. Thursday, City of Austin: Todd Park North Diamond

The track meet is sponsored by the Austin Noon Kiwanis and open to anyone age 3 and over. Field events will begin at 6:15 p.m. and running events at 6:30 p.m. The event is free and everyone will receive ribbons. For more information, call 507-433-1881.

2. LeRoy Summerfest Celebration

All day, Friday-Sunday, LeRoy

There will be food stands, a variety show, a 5K walk/run with glow sticks, the Neil Yost Memorial Co-ed Volleyball Tournament, First State Bank 100th Anniversary Tour and Open House, LeRoy Public Library 100th Anniversary Tour and Open House, a container gardening contest, a pedal pull, a car and motorcycle show.

There will also be a kids carnival, bingo, a Windsor chop dinner, a 72 team single-elimination beanbag tournament, a grand parade, free watermelon and kiddy train rides, vendors and more at the LeRoy Summerfest Celebration. For more information, call 507-324-5707.

3. 2015 JAKES/PF Day

9:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Saturday, Cedar Valley Conservation Club

The event is free to for ages 5 to 17 years old and events include archery, trap shooting, .22-caliber rifles, BB and pellet guns, demonstrations, lunch and door prizes. There will be a special door prize drawing for those who purchase a membership for $10, which helps support JAKES programs. Parents are encouraged to accompany their child. 4. Spruce Up Austin Yard and Garden Tour

11 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Austin

This self-guided tour takes viewers around privately-owned yards and gardens in Austin. Tickets are available at Berg’s Nursery, Dolan’s Landscape, Hardy Geranium, Hy-Vee and Super Fresh Garden Center. Tickets are $10 in advance or $12 on Saturday.

5. Mower County Humane Society Meet-and-Greet Day

11 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, CRC, 2000 8th St. NW

Come meet with special animal visitors from the Mower County Humane Society and learn how to adopt an animal or help the shelter. There will also be a hot-dog lunch for $4 and door prizes. All proceeds benefit the Mower County Humane Society. For more information, call 507-437-2304.

6. Minnesota adult and teen challenge choir

8:30-9:30 a.m. Sunday, Faith Free Church

Come see a free concert by the Minnesota teen and adult challenge choir from Rochester on Sunday at 8:30 and 10 a.m. at Faith Church in Austin. Come and hear dramatic stories of hope and freedom from addiction. Faith Church is located at 1800 12th St. SW in Austin.

7. Danny Ruroden Fundraiser

9-11 a.m. Sunday, Fellowship Hall, 306 Second St. NW, Austin

Come support Officer Danny Ruroden at a fundraiser with coffee and treats, sponsored by Thrivent and St. Olaf Lutheran Church.

8. Packer Classic Banquet and Auction

5:30-9:30 p.m. Sunday, Hormel Historic Home

This banquet and auction is presented by the Austin Public Education Foundation. Proceeds will benefit students in the Austin Public Schools.
