A 23-year-old Austin man was arrested early Sunday for breaking into a home, fleeing from police and trying to fight officers.
Police Chief Brian Krueger said homeowners discovered the man in their home at the 700 block of Second Avenue Northwest shortly before 3 a.m. Sunday after he snuck in through a bedroom window.
One of the homeowners confronted and got into a scuffle with the suspect and pushed him into a broken window, according to Krueger.
Officers investigating the burglary heard the suspect break a tree branch in the backyard when he tried to get away. After a foot chase, the man gave himself up to police once he heard the Austin police K-9 unit barking.
Krueger said the man tried to kick and head-butt officers while he was taken into custody and initially refused to get into a squad car. Officers took the suspect to Mayo Clinic Health System in Austin for a cut on his face, which he likely received during his fight with the homeowner.
The suspect is in Mower County jail pending formal charges.
