Two Austin residents lost more than $15,000 in collectible sports cards and car statues earlier this week after they discovered burglars broke into their storage unit in the 1600 block of 31st Street Southwest Austin.
Mower County Chief Deputy Mark May said the stolen goods included a Kirby Puckett baseball card worth $1,500; a set of cards from the 1967 Minnesota Twins team, including a signed Tony Oliva card, worth $6,500; more than $3,500 worth of football cards including a 1997 Green Bay Packers set of cards; and more than $2,500 in collectible car statues, which included model cars from “The Dukes of Hazzard” and NASCAR statues.
“It’s just a very expensive loss,” May said.
The burglary took place between May 30 and June 2, according to the victims. The owners went to check their storage unit Tuesday night and discovered a new padlock on their door.
Also missing is a white and light green Trek bicycle, worth $300, and about $400 in air tools and other miscellaneous items.
The Mower County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the burglary. Anyone with information is encouraged to call area law enforcement at 507-437-9400.
