Maureen A. Bawek, 67, of Austin, Minnesota, died Thursday, June 11, 2015, at her home.

Maureen Anne O’Brien was born Jan. 1, 1948, in Austin, Minnesota, to Timothy J. and Anne C. (Boyenga) O’Brien. She attended Austin Public Schools, graduating from Austin High School in 1966. On Sept. 2, 1967, Maureen was united in marriage to Darwin Gilbert Bawek at Queen of Angels Catholic Church. She began her career at Hormel Foods, and then raised her family before returning to work in the Hormel corporate office as an executive administrative assistant, retiring on Jan. 1, 2008. Maureen and Darwin raised three children and were foster parents to six children. She was a member of St. Augustine Catholic Church, the Historical Society and the Genealogy Society. Maureen enjoyed playing the piano and guitar, singing, and was an amazing gardener. Other favorite pastimes included making jewelry, purses and scarves. She showed great strength, and will be missed by all who knew and loved her.

Maureen is survived by her husband Darwin Bawek of Austin, Minnesota; her children: Scott (Tamara) Bawek of San Diego, California, Michelle “Mickey” (Dwight) Smith, and Jeff Bawek (Bridget Schmidt), both of Austin; nine grandchildren: Jake Smith, Jesse Smith, Jared Mauer, Olivia Bawek, Cassidy Bawek, Noah Bawek, Alec Bawek, Cooper Schmidt-Bawek, Peyton Schmidt-Bawek; and her brother Michael O’Brien of Muskwonago, Wisconsin.

She was preceded in death by her parents Timothy and Anne O’Brien; and her brothers: Larry and Patrick O’Brien.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, June 15, 2015, at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Austin with Father James Steffes officiating. Visitation will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, June 14, 2015, and one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery. Memorials can be directed to the ALS Foundation or recipient of donor’s choice. Worlein Funeral Home of Austin is assisting the family with arrangements. Condolences may be expressed to the family online at www.worlein.com.
