Mower County Sheriff Terese Amazi is warning residents to watch out for a new scam involving Publishers Clearing House.

Amazi said the phone scam involves someone pretending to be from the decades-old contest who calls victims, asks them to buy Walmart gift cards, and receives the gift card’s PIN numbers. The suspect allegedly claims they don’t want the victims’ money but need victims to buy Walmart gift cards to become eligible for sweepstakes and lotteries.

Two people reported the scam Tuesday, though no one has given the suspects money yet, according to Amazi.
