Melvin Duane Haldorson, 86, died on Sunday, May 10, 2015, at his home in Austin, Minnesota.
Mel was born on Feb. 22, 1929, in Freeborn County. His parents were Martha (Holte) and Albert Haldorson of rural Austin. Mel attended District No. 139 Country School of Freeborn County through eighth grade. He attended Albert Lea High School and graduated from Austin High School in 1947.
Following high school, Mel worked as a mechanic for Wally Amacher in London, Minnesota. From 1950 to 1952, Mel served his country in the US Army. Following his duty of service, he attended Dunwoody Institute in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He graduated in 1956 with a degree in automotive service and electric.
After his graduation, Mel opened his own business called H & S Carburetor and Electric in Austin, Minnesota. He married Janet Majerus on Feb. 16, 1963. Mel retired from H & S Carburetor in February 1998.
Mel enjoyed spending time playing golf, fishing and being with his two sons and his three grandchildren. Mel was a member of the Elks, American Legion and Our Savior’s Lutheran Church.
He was preceded in death by an infant son Bryce; his mother and father; and a brother Obert.
Mel is survived by his wife Janet; his two sons: Brian (Sandy) Haldorson of Rochester, Minnesota, and Tim (Shelby) Haldorson of Austin, Minnesota; three grandchildren: Miranda Haldorson and Mitch Haldorson of Rochester, Minnesota, and Meghan Haldorson of Austin, Minnesota; brother, Nordeen (Mary Lou) Haldorson of Mankato, Minnesota; and several nieces and nephews.
There will be a private memorial service for family with the Rev. Glenn L. Monson officiating. Interment will be at Oakwood Cemetery. Clasen-Jordan Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
