The Austin Police Department just gained its first female sergeant.

Sgt. Kim Lenz started her first day on the job Thursday after she passed a sergeant’s exam earlier this week.

“I’m excited,” she said. “I just felt that it was the next step in my career.

Lenz has been with the Austin department for eight and a half years. She will take over the position for Dustin Wollenburg, who was promoted to lieutenant a few weeks ago.
