Best Bets: Working out for the weekend

Get ready to get to walk to work this weekend and promote a healthy lifestyle. This weekend is filled with fun things, from a hockey championship series to dancing with local stars, something is sure to help get the groove on.

1. Bike Walk to Work

All Day, Friday, Austin

This event is designed to promote and practice safe biking and walking to work and school, with all the benefits involved. Participating organizations include the City of Austin and Mayo Clinic Health Systems. For more information, call 507-437-3448.

2. Band Blast

7 p.m., Friday, Austin High School Knowlton Auditorium

Austin Public School band students are getting ready for their final concert Friday. The annual Austin High School Band Blast concert is set for 7 p.m. Friday in AHS’s Knowlton Auditorium. As the fourth and final concert of the school year, senior students will be recognized at this concert. The bands will feature songs from movies John Williams has scored, such as “Star Wars,” “Superman,” “Jurassic Park,” “Olympic Fanfare” and more. The jazz band will also perform, along with a wood wind group and percussion features. Tickets will be available at the door and cost $7 for adults and $5 for students. High school students are free with an ID and anyone with a music booster season pass or AHS activity or athletic pass is free.

3. 10th Annual VFW Classic Car Show

8 a.m.-3 p.m., Saturday, Veterans of Foreign Wars

This event is open to the public. Registration is from 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and the show is from 12 to 3 p.m. in the VFW parking lot. 1950s and 1960s music, food, door prizes, and silent auction add will to the fun. For more information, call 507-433-6039.

4. Music @ the Bank: The Studebaker Brothers

7-8:30 p.m., Saturday, Austin ArtWorks Center

Listen to the Studebaker Brothers this weekend. Tickets are $5 at the door. For more information, call 507-434-0934.

5. Bruins in the NAHL Robertson Cup

7:05 p.m., Friday-Saturday, Sunday if needed, Riverside Arena

The Austin Bruins will face the Minnesota Wilderness and play for the Robertson Cup at Riverside Arena. The two teams are playing for the NAHL championship.

6. Dancing with the Freeborn-Mower Stars

7 p.m., Saturday, Albert Lea Senior High School Auditorium

Habitat for Humanity Freeborn/Mower invites the public to their fundraiser Dancing with the Stars. Tickets are $15 dollars and can be purchased at Hy-Vee in Austin or Albert Lea, or at the Restore in Austin. This event will feature couples from both the Mower and Freeborn County areas. Proceeds will go to support the mission of Habitat for Humanity Freeborn/Mower to bring people together to build affordable decent housing for others. Come out and support the dancers and Habitat for Humanity Freeborn/Mower.

7. Veteran’s Sunday

9 a.m.-12 p.m., Sunday, Grace Lutheran Church, 2001 6th Ave. SE

There will be one service at 9 a.m. The message will be delivered by Wayne Huinker. Join as Grace Lutheran honors active and retired personnel. A light lunch will be served following the worship service. Everyone is welcome.
