Downtown Austin will soon get a lot of spam.

Construction on the Spam Museum will start up over the next few weeks, according to city officials. As a result, residents may have a harder time parking and walking near the construction site between Second and Fourth Avenues on the east side of North Main Street.

The site will be fenced off, including the plaza where Third Avenue Northeast will be reopened between Main Street and First Street Northeast, according to Public Works Director Steven Lang. In addition, the parking lot adjacent to the Spam Museum site will be closed, and residents are encouraged to park at the county lot on the west side of First Street Northeast.

There will still be sidewalk space along the south side of Third Avenue and the west side of First Street, but parking and the sidewalk on Main Street next to the construction site will close.

Parking could be displaced as early as this week and the site will be fenced off next week.

Hormel Foods Corp. announced the 14,000-square-foot building last May and demolition on various buildings on the property started in September.

If all goes well, the new Spam Museum will open in spring or summer of 2016 in time for Hormel’s 125th anniversary.
