Riverland Community College sophomore Miriah Carruth has made a lot of improvements and she’s shown a lot of heart in her two years with the Blue Devil’s women’s basketball team.

Now Carruth will be taking her game to the next level as she signed her national-letter-of-intent with Waldorf College at RCC Wednesday. Carruth will receive a partial athletic scholarship at Waldorf, which is located in Forest City, Iowa.

“I’m very excited and I’m very blessed. I’m just ready for the season to start already,” Carruth said.

Carruth was named to the All-MCAC Southern Division first team, the All MCAC State team and the All-Region team this past season. She averaged 17.4 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists and 1.4 steals per game. Her highlight of the year came when she set an RCC single game record by scoring 48 points against Western Tech and she added 12 rebounds and seven assists in that contest, in which she was playing with a broken finger.

Carruth thought about red-shirting when she broke her finger, but she had played too many games to qualify for it so she decided to gut out down the stretch of the season.

“It was fun and I wasn’t going to let a broken pinky keep me down,” Carruth said. “I tried to tough it out the last few games. It helped me be a better player.”

Carruth played high school basketball at St. Paul Johnson and RCC was the first school to recruit her out of high school. Two years ago she mostly a shooting guard, but she has learned to play the point guard position under the tutelage of former RCC head women’s basketball coach Suzy Hebrink.

“It really helped a lot playing here,” Carruth said. “[Suzy] taught me many offensive things that I didn’t have and she helped me turn into a point guard that I really wasn’t. I came in as a two guard and she helped me take the role of a point guard and become a better defensive player and a better passer.”

The Blue Devils finished 7-20 overall this season and Waldorf went 4-26 overall last season.

Carruth is the first RCC women’s basketball player to continue her college basketball career since St. Clair native Joni Lillo went on to play at Waldorf after her 2011 season with the Blue Devils.
