Austin police are looking into whether a man tried to abduct two children on Monday.

Police Chief Brian Krueger said a man allegedly walked near two children playing at Cullen Park in southwest Austin around 6:15 p.m. Monday and told them, “Let’s go.”

The children, 8 and 7, said they were going to get their parents. At that point, the man allegedly ran north toward an alley adjacent to the park, near Eighth Street and 14th Avenue Southwest.

It’s unclear whether this was a serious abduction attempt, however. Krueger said the male allegedly made no attempt to walk toward the children, who were playing on the playground.

In addition, one of the children reported the man carried a small pocket knife but never pointed it toward the victims. The children reportedly heard police sirens at about the same time the man had asked them to go with him, however.

Krueger said the suspect is described as a Hispanic male wearing a black shirt and work boots, but didn’t have more details.

“It’s spring now. It’s good to know or have eyes on your children so you know exactly where they are,” Krueger said.

He also said it was unfortunate to have to take such precautions but parents would be wise to pay more attention to where their children are playing.
