Bicyclists will soon get a little protection when riding on Fourth Street and 16th Avenue Southwest.
The Austin City Council approved plans on Monday to mark both roadways as shared bike/car lanes on Fourth Street from First Avenue Southwest to the Turtle Creek Bridge, and along 16th Avenue Southwest to 31st Street Southwest.
Public Works Director Steven Lang told the council about 120 markings will be needed, which will cost about $1,635.
In addition, the project will push other sign marking projects behind as the city only has one person on its sign crew.
Steven Kime, co-chair of Vision 2020’s Bike/Walk Trails Committee, praised the city for its decision to add shared lanes, which he sees as a way to help the city connect its trails and pathways to allow for more biking opportunities.
“It’s huge,” Kime said. “Whether it be trails or shared lanes, it helps us to accomplish this.”
