Charge: Patient stole video games from visiting boy

ST. PAUL — A Minneapolis man is accused of stealing more than $1,000 worth of video gaming systems and games from an 8-year-old boy who was visiting him in the hospital.

Forty-three-year-old Dave Schmotter is charged with theft in Ramsey County.

Schmotter is accused of taking a case containing the items and hanging it on his intravenous stand while the boy and his mother were distracted.

According to the complaint, the woman and her son visited Schmotter on Nov. 17 while he was a patient at Bethesda Hospital in St. Paul.

Court documents say hospital surveillance video showed Schmotter taking the boy’s case containing two gaming systems and between 30 to 40 games. The items were recovered.
