ST. PAUL — Police officials say officers tried using nonlethal ammunition before fatally shooting a man who was armed with a rifle in St. Paul.

Officers were called to a residence Monday on a report of a man with a rifle. Sgt. Paul Paulos says officers encountered a man wearing a bulletproof vest and armed with a rifle.

Paulos says tactical officers and negotiators arrived on the scene. He says the man — identified as 28-year-old Justin Todd Tolkinen of St. Paul — eventually came out of the house, multiple shots were fired and the suspect was hit. No officers were injured.
