House budget blueprint to signal GOP’s wishes

ST. PAUL — A budget blueprint from Minnesota House Republicans will provide the first clues about the size of tax cuts the new majority will pursue.

The broad targets being released Tuesday also will show how much money the GOP is proposing to spend on each section of the budget. Education is likely to see more, but health and welfare programs could see less than they were slated to get under current programs.

Minnesota has a projected $1.87 billion surplus. House Speaker Kurt Daudt has said at least half of that should go back through unspecified tax cuts, but other Republicans want to go even further in that area.

Once the targets are set, committees will spend the next several weeks filling in line-by-line details. Senate Democrats issue their targets later this week.
