Local women to be honored on March 23

Six local women will be honored at a dinner March 23.

The Zonta Club of Austin will host a dinner at the Holiday Inn and Conference Center on March 23. The dinner will honor women from Mower County that have been nominated by family, friends or co-workers. This year there are six nominees and one of them will be declared the Mower County “Woman of Achievement.” They are: Lori Espe, Jana Gray, Gina Grundmeier, Rachel Knutson, Kristin Olson and Peggy Young. The public is encouraged to come and support these women.

Money raised from this fundraiser will help with scholarships given on a yearly basis from the Zonta Club. They are: the Zonta Non-Traditional Scholarship at Riverland Community College, Young Woman in Public Affairs award for a high-school student, the Jane M. Klausman, Woman in Business award for a college student, and the GED program for non-traditional students.

Zonta International works with 67 different countries and this year’s guest speaker will be Habibo Haja. She will tell her story of living in Somalia to being drawn from a lottery to come to the United States where she is a nurse at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester.

Participants can purchase individual tickets or a table for this event. Tickets are $30. For more information on this event, contact Mary Jo Follmuth at 507-437-8773 or Cheryl Retterath at 507-438-4330.
